Aït Ben Haddou, Morocco: The Ultimate Guide to Morocco’s Famous Desert Kasbah
The traditional buildings of Ait Ben Haddou in Morocco.
A Storybook Arrival
I’ll never forget the moment I first saw Aït Ben Haddou appear in the distance. It felt like stepping into another time… or straight onto a movie set (which, as it turns out, it often is).
This UNESCO World Heritage site is more than just a photo stop. It’s a living ksar (fortified village), where a handful of families still reside among the centuries-old walls. For travellers, it’s a chance to explore Morocco’s history, and cinematic legacy in one stop.
What Exactly Is Aït Ben Haddou?
Aït Ben Haddou is a ksar (a group of earthen buildings surrounded by defensive walls) along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. It dates back to the 17th century and is one of the best-preserved examples of southern Moroccan architecture.
Once a stop for traders carrying salt, gold, and spices, today it’s famous for being a backdrop in films and shows like Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, and Lawrence of Arabia. I’m ashamed to say… I haven’t watched most of these films (I know, I know)… but I was there for the history and the stunning photo opportunities.

Top Things to Do in Aït Ben Haddou
1. Wander Through the Ksar
Lose yourself in the maze of alleyways, tunnels, and mudbrick houses. You’ll pass through beautiful doors, tiny shops, and courtyards where families still gather.
👉 Traveller’s Tip: Wear sturdy shoes… the pathways can be steep, uneven, and dusty.
2. Climb to the Granary at the Top
The climb to the old granary at the very top of the ksar rewards you with panoramic views across the Ounila River valley, the desert plains, and the Atlas Mountains in the distance.
👉 Traveller’s Tip: Go at sunrise or sunset for golden light (and fewer crowds). Unfortunately we visited during stormy weather, yet it was still beautiful.
3. Spot Famous Filming Locations
Gladiator - The slave market scene was filmed here.
Game of Thrones - Aït Ben Haddou doubled as Yunkai, the Yellow City.
The Mummy and Lawrence of Arabia also filmed iconic sequences here.

4. Visit a Women’s Co-Op
Also across the river is a Women’s Co-Op. These entrepreneurial women weave beautifully crafted rugs in their spare time to help support their families. Each colour and symbol on the rugs has special meaning, and you can learn all about them while wandering through the Co-Op. If you’re looking for a great souvenir that’s made locally, has meaning, and supports the local community, this is a great spot.
5. Enjoy Mint Tea with a View
Several cafés sit on the riverbank, offering rooftop terraces with perfect photo opportunities of the kasbah. Sip mint tea and soak in the view… it’s one of the best ways to slow down and appreciate where you are.
