What I Pack in My Carry-On for Long-Haul Flights
Never be left short on a long-haul flight again.
Long-haul flights: a necessary evil (until you’re not prepared)
As an Australian, I know getting anywhere often takes time. Long-haul flights aren’t optional… they’re the gateway to bucket-list adventures, unforgettable landscapes and life-changing experiences.
But they can also be uncomfortable, exhausting… and wildly unpredictable.
I learned this the hard way on a recent long-haul flight from Australia to the USA. A simple 2.5 hour stopover in Dallas turned into a 24-hour airport survival situation when Texas was hit by a once-in-a-century snowstorm. Flights cancelled. Hotels full. Uber shut down. Heating barely functioning in some terminals. And the outside temperature? -12°C.
After finally arriving at my destination… tired, and in desperate need of a good shower and change of clothes… my checked baggage was nowhere to be found.
That experience completely reinforced something I’ve believed for years: What you pack in your carry-on can make or break your journey.
So here’s exactly what I pack in my carry-on for long-haul flights… not as a packing list for perfection, but as a comfort, preparedness and sanity strategy.
Why your carry-on matters more than your checked luggage
Your carry-on isn’t just a bag. It’s your:
Comfort kit
Contingency plan
Survival pack for delays, cancellations and lost luggage
If your checked bag disappears (and one day, it will), your carry-on becomes your lifeline.
My go-to carry-on bag (and why I swear by a backpack)
For long-haul flights, I always travel with:
A hard-shell suitcase on wheels (back pain-friendly, always)
A carry-on backpack (hands-free, practical, multi-purpose)
The backpack I use
I use the Tildy Carryall Camera Backpack (Tan) by Australian brand taz + tez, and I genuinely love it. I own four of their bags.
Why it works:
Looks stylish (not like a camera bag)
Made from vegan leather
Fits under airline carry-on limits
Slides over suitcase handles
Laptop pocket and tripod pouch (also great for water bottles)
Removable padded inserts for camera gear
Bottom-access zip (absolute game-changer)
Opens fully so you can see everything at once
It doubles as my:
Flight carry-on
Day pack
Hiking bag
Road trip backpack
Less packing. More flexibility.
This is exactly what’s in my carry-on.
What I pack in my carry-on for long-haul flights
1. Electronics & valuables (always in carry-on)
These never go in checked luggage:
Camera + lenses
Drone (if travelling with one)
GoPro
Laptop
Power bank
Phone + charging cables
International power converter (you never know when you’ll be stuck in an airport and need one)
Tip: Use soft items like scarves or jackets as extra padding if required.

2. My travel outfit (comfort first, always)
I have a tried-and-tested travel outfit:
Black activewear tights and matching comfortable crop (no buckles or seams)
Charcoal LSKD cropped singlet
White sandshoes (the same ones I’ll wear on the trip)
Denim jacket
But flights are cold, so I always pack layers.

3. Warm layers & comfort essentials
Thick, cosy socks (for sleeping on the plane)
Scarf (the MVP of travel)
Warmth
Modesty for temples
Sun and sand protection
Extra cushioning in your bag
Hat (clipped to my backpack or on my head in transit to or from my flight)
Sunnies (to keep them safe, and for sunrise watchers like me)
Lesson learned: Always consider the weather at your stopover, not just your destination.
4. Travel documents & essentials
Passport
Visa documents
International driver’s licence
Cash (split between carry-on and checked bag)
Pen (never rely on the airline)
Keys, wallet, valuables

5. Health, hygiene & “just in case” items
Pain relief (non-negotiable)
Tissues (sinuses + dry cabin air)
Hand sanitiser
Band-aids
Tampons
Face mask (because I always sit next to someone sick, and I won’t let it ruin my trip)
Lip balm
Mini hand cream (especially in cold climates)
6. Sleep kit (even if the airline promises one)
Never assume you’ll be given anything.
Eye mask
Toothbrush + mini toothpaste
Face wipes (single-use packs from hotels are perfect)
Tip: Use bottled water to brush your teeth, not plane bathroom water.
7. Entertainment & inspiration
I don’t pack books. I pack:
Podcasts (downloaded)
Audiobooks
Netflix shows or movies
Offline Google Maps
Screenshots of travel blogs, tips and reservations
Notebook for planning and journaling
This is my guidebook alternative… lighter, smarter and more flexible.
8. The underrated lifesavers
These have saved me more times than I can count:
Empty water bottle (refill post-security)
Spare zip-lock bag (snacks, leaks, wet swimwear)
Jewellery I don’t want damaged
Spare underwear (trust me on this one)
Notebook
Minimal travel size makeup (only if heading straight out on arrival)
A change of clothes
After a long-haul flight + 24 hours stranded + lost luggage… spare underwear was elite-level foresight.
I’m obsessed with my taz + tez backpack.
What I don’t pack (on purpose)
Snacks (customs nightmare, there’s usually plenty of food onboard)
Neck pillow (bulky, annoying)
Full skincare routine (24 hours without face moisturiser won’t kill me)
Perfume (hello duty-free testing)
Books (audiobooks win)
The one thing I’d pack if I had room
A micro blanket. I’m always cold, and airline blankets are never enough.
The philosophy behind my carry-on packing
I pack for:
Comfort
Easy transit
Delays, cancellations and lost luggage
Because if it hasn’t happened to you yet… it will. Prepared travellers enjoy the journey more.
