Tahune AirWalk: Walking Among Giants in Tasmania’s Huon Valley

Tahune Forest AirWalk, Tasmania

Walk amongst the trees on the Tahune Forest Airwalk.

Located in Tasmania’s Huon Valley, about 1.5 hours south of Hobart, the Tahune AirWalk is a series of elevated walkways that take you high above the forest floor, suspended among some of the tallest trees in the world.

The hero experience here is the AirWalk itself, a short but unforgettable stroll that winds its way through the canopy before opening up to sweeping views over the Huon and Picton Rivers.

It’s accessible, and perfect if you want big impact without a big hike.

Walking the Tahune AirWalk

The AirWalk is the shortest walk on site, but easily the most breathtaking. You’ll wander along steel walkways that gradually lift you above the forest floor, surrounded by towering trees that make you feel small, in the best possible way. Looking down, the dark river winds through the valley below.

A few things to know:

  • It can get very windy up on the platforms

  • The weather can change quickly… sun one moment, mist the next

  • Bring layers, even in warmer months

  • There are a few shelters that protect you from the wind and rain

That unpredictability is part of the magic. Tasmania doesn’t do predictable, and Tahune is no exception. We experienced sun, rain, wind and very cold weather during our late November visit.

Other Walks at Tahune (Worth Adding On)

If you’ve got the time and energy, there are a few other walks worth tacking on:

Swinging Bridges Track

This one takes you lower into the forest and across two suspension bridges, swaying gently above the river. It’s a little longer than the AirWalk and gives you a different perspective… closer to the water, deeper into the trees.

Huon Pine Walk

This 20 minute walk takes you on a boardwalk through the impressive Huon Pines. The track is perfect for children, due to it’s ease, and then native animal statues hidden along the track for children to spot.

Practical Tips Before You Go

  • Allow 1.5-2 hours if you plan to do more than just the AirWalk

  • Wear sturdy shoes, even the shorter walks can be damp

  • Dress for all seasons, regardless of the forecast (trust me)

  • Facilities include toilets and a café on-site

This is a great stop for couples, families, and anyone who wants an immersive nature experience without committing to a full-day hike.

Accommodation: Why not stay the night, with cabin, lodge and camping options available.

Turn It Into a Perfect Huon Valley Day

Warm Up at Willie Smith’s Apple Shed

After our walk, we were absolutely freezing, and The Apple Shed felt like the perfect way to warm up.

Home of Willie Smith’s Cider, this place is warm, welcoming, and full of character. We sat by the fireplace and ordered warm spiced apple cider, which honestly might be one of the best post-walk treats in Tasmania.

They’re famous for their home made apple pie with ice cream… and while I didn’t try it myself (vegan here), my family did and declared it the best apple pie they’d ever eaten. It looked incredible.

The grounds are just as lovely:

  • Fire pits

  • Outdoor seating

  • Lavender

  • Live music on Friday’s

  • A relaxed, local vibe

Inside is also the Apple Museum, showcasing the Huon Valley’s apple-growing history.

Stop at Nearby Lookouts

If you’re exploring the area, keep an eye out for nearby lookouts dotted through the Huon Valley. They’re easy stops that deliver big views, perfect for stretching your legs and soaking up just how wild and green this part of Tasmania is.

How to Get to Tahune AirWalk

  • From Hobart: ~1.5 hours by car

  • Head south through Huonville and follow signs toward Tahune

  • The roads are sealed and suitable for standard vehicles

Tahune fits beautifully into a Huon Valley loop, especially when paired with cideries, short walks, and local food stops.

Best Time to Visit

Tahune is stunning year-round, but each season has its own vibe:

  • Spring: Lush, green, rivers flowing fast

  • Summer: Longer days, milder conditions

  • Autumn: Crisp air and golden tones

  • Winter: Moody, dramatic, and beautifully quiet (layer up!)

If you love atmospheric travel photography, overcast days here are chef’s kiss.

Where This Fits Into Your Tasmania Itinerary

The Tahune AirWalk pairs perfectly with:

  • A Huon Valley day trip from Hobart

  • A stop between Hobart and the far south

  • A slow-travel Tasmania itinerary focused on nature and local experiences

The Tahune AirWalk isn’t about ticking off a long hike or chasing adrenaline. It’s about perspective… standing among giants, feeling the wind through the treetops, and remembering just how wild Tasmania really is.

Pair it with warm cider, good company, and a slow afternoon in the Huon Valley, and you’ve got yourself a quietly unforgettable Tassie day.
