The Best Day Trips from Port Vila, Vanuatu

Umbrella on the beach at Mali Beach Club on Efate Island. A great day trip from Port Vila in Vanuatu.

Cocktails on the beach anyone? Mali Beach Club is calling your name.

One of the best things about basing yourself in Port Vila is how much you can see without constantly packing up and moving accommodation.

Efate Island is compact, but it punches well above its weight. Within an hour (sometimes minutes), you can be floating in turquoise lagoons, snorkelling coral reefs, swinging into waterfalls, or sipping sunset drinks on a floating bar.

If you’re visiting Vanuatu for the first time, these are the day trips that genuinely deliver, not just look good in photos.

Pele Island: The Ultimate Island Escape

If you only do one day trip from Port Vila, make it Pele Island.

Pele Island feels like what people think Vanuatu looks like… white sand, coconut palms, crystal-clear water and a pace of life that immediately slows your nervous system.

We visited on a guided day tour, which included:

  • A boat ride from Efate

  • Lunch on the island

  • Snorkelling over vibrant coral

  • A walk through the local village

  • Time to swim, kayak or simply do nothing

The snorkelling here was some of the best we experienced on Efate, including sightings of reef sharks and large schools of fish. Pair it with a visit to Top Rock Lookout where you can take in beautiful views and snorkel around the reef.

Why it’s worth it: This isn’t a resort island. It’s a lived-in place, and the cultural element is just as memorable as the water.

Erakor Island: Easy, Relaxed & Close to Town

Just a short boat ride from Port Vila, Erakor Island is one of the easiest day trips you can do, and one of the most enjoyable.

Even if you’re not staying overnight, you can:

  • Catch the boat over

  • Swim and snorkel right off the beach

  • Use kayaks and snorkel gear

  • Have lunch or a cocktail by the water

The lagoon here is calm and perfect if you want a low-effort, high-reward day.

Best for: Slow travel days, lagoon swims, relaxed lunches, and travellers who don’t want a long drive. They also have a great Melanesian Feast Night with traditional dishes and fire dancing.

Moso Island: Remote, Luxe & All About Switching Off

If you’re craving something quieter and more secluded, Moso Island is a beautiful option.

Moso Island is known for:

  • Clear water

  • Coral snorkelling

  • Boutique, high-end resorts

  • Caves

  • A feeling of being away from everything

This is less about ticking attractions off a list and more about disconnecting.

Good to know: It’s best done as a guided day trip or via a resort transfer, and it suits travellers who are happy to spend the day mostly in one spot.

Blue Lagoon, Eton Beach & Rarru Cascades: 3 Unreal Experiences in One Day

On the east side of the island, you’ll find many great experiences that can be paired together into one epic day trip. One of my favourites is pairing Eton Beach, Blue Lagoon, and Rarru Cascades.

Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is one of the most photographed spots on Efate, and for good reason. The colour of the water honestly doesn’t look real. It’s an easy stop if you’re self-driving and works perfectly when paired with nearby beaches or waterfalls. The water is calm, warm and incredibly inviting.

Tip: Go earlier in the day if you want fewer people and softer light.

Eton Beach

Often paired with Blue Lagoon, Eton Beach is a beautiful stretch of sand with calm, shallow, clear water. If you’re looking for something even calmer, wade through the waters of Eton Creek that flows into Eton Beach.

It’s ideal for:

  • A beach walk

  • A swim

  • A relaxed picnic stop

There’s something about Eton Beach that feels untouched, even though it’s easily accessible.

Rarru Cascades

If you’re deciding between waterfalls, it can be hard to know which one it the right fit for you. We chose Rarru Cascades. We asked the locals and all of them recommended Rarru Cascades, and they were absolutely right. The walk alone is stunning, winding past cascading streams before reaching the main waterfall. Once there, you can:

  • Swim

  • Jump from platforms (or the waterfall itself)

  • Use rope swings

  • Cool off after hot island days

Why Rarru stands out: It’s locally run, less commercial, and feels far more natural than some alternatives.

Mele Region: Mele Cascades, Beach Clubs & Adventure

Vanuatu Jungle Zipline

Swing through the jungle on a series of 6 Ziplines at the summit of Vanuatu Jungle Zipline. If you’re looking to take the adventure up a notch, try the jungle swing… a bungee alternative. If flying through the air isn’t your style, you can enjoy the gardens and sky bridge with come of the best views on Efate.

Tanna Coffee

Positioned inside the first Catholic Catholic Mission Church is the Tanna Coffee Roastery. Take a free tour around the roastery before stopping for a delicious coffee in the cafe. Don’t be surprised if a chicken or dog wanders around your feet as you sip away.

Mele Cascades

Mele Cascades is one of the most well-known waterfalls near Port Vila, and the most popular, for good reason. Wear water or reef shoes to navigate the walk to the waterfall. Check the cruise ship schedule and go early on cruise ship days to avoid the crowds.

Mali Beach Club or The Beach Bar

A trip to the Mele region wouldn’t be complete without popping in for a cocktail or 2 at Mali Beach Club. With cabanas, deck chairs, and even swing chairs, this is a great place to kick back and relax.

If you’re visiting on a Friday, book a table at The Beach Barto watch their famous fire show… easily one of the most memorable nights near Port Vila. You don’t need a ticket, just a dinner reservation.

Bonus Half Day Trips (If You Have Time)

Best Time of Year for Day Trips from Port Vila

  • Dry season: May-October (cooler, less humid)

  • Wet season: November-April (lush, warmer, fewer crowds)

We visited in early April, right at the end of cyclone season, and still had excellent weather. Don’t panic if rain shows in the forecast; it often passes quickly.
