Why Chefchaouen Deserves a Spot on Moroccan Bucket List
The blue streets of Chefchaouen, Morocco.
The Blue Pearl of Morocco
Chefchaouen looks like a dream. Nestled in the mountains in Northern Morocco, this blue-washed city feels like you’ve stepped into the Mediterranean… but with North African twist. Unlike the fast-paced chaos of Marrakech, Chefchaouen invites you to slow down and explore. Chefchaouen might just be the most photogenic place in Morocco, but it’s so much more than just blue walls and Insta shots. Here’s why this underrated gem deserves a spot on your bucket list… and how to experience it without the crowds.
Don’t Just Day Trip, Stay Overnight
Too many travellers skip northern Morocco entirely, while for others it’s a brief pitstop. But spending a night in Chefchaouen allows you to wander the medina at golden hour, once the tour buses have gone and the blue alleyways are empty. Trust me, this is where the magic happens.
Traveller Tip: Head out early in the morning or stay out late in the afternoon to catch the medina at its most peaceful.
Exploring the Medina: Where Blue Dreams Begin
While the main area of the Medina can get crowded, the outer corners are where you’ll find quietness, and the best photo spots. Wander aimlessly. Get lost on purpose. Turn down that tiny alley and see where it leads.
Hot Tip: Be kind to the locals, and you might just be shown a secret photo spot or a shop’s hidden gem.
Getting the Perfect Shot (Without the Tourists)
Yes, some photo spots charge a small fee… usually the equivalent of a few cents or dollars, or an orange juice. But you can find endless Instagram worthy blue corners for free… simply wander the media with an open mind.
Photography Pro Tip: Avoid wearing blue in Chefchaouen… you’ll blend in. Instead, opt for bold colours like red, orange, yellow, or white for the perfect contrast.
Say Hello to the Cats of Chefchaouen
Cats are part of the soul of this city. Moroccans don’t “own” them, but they’re fed, loved, and respected… and they’re everywhere. It adds an unexpected charm to the blue streets.
Step Into History: Visit the Kasbah
This ochre-coloured fortress is one of the few places not painted blue. Inside, you’ll find a tranquil garden, a small ethnographic museum, and the best panoramic views of the medina from its towers.
Worth it: For a few dirhams, it’s a welcome escape from the crowds and chaos outside.
Where to Eat in Chefchaouen
Restaurant Triana – Sunset views, rolling green hills, and live music (if you sit indoors). Outdoor dining here was one of our favourite moments at sunset.
Where to Stay in Chefchaouen
Hotel Parador – Centrally located with beautiful views and a pool overlooking the city. Perfect for a short stay.
Shopping in the Medina: A Hidden Gem
Contrary to what we were told, the shopping in Chefchaouen was better (and cheaper!) than Marrakech. We found high-quality textiles, ceramics, and art… so if you fall in love with something, buy it here.
A Word on “Chocolate”
Chefchaouen is in the heart of Morocco’s cannabis-growing region. Be cautious: “chocolate” is sometimes a code word for hash. Politely decline unless you know what you’re getting into… and remember, it’s still illegal in Morocco.
Weather & What to Wear
Even when it’s cold, the medina is surprisingly sheltered. In 11°C, we were comfortably walking in short sleeves. Avoid blue, and opt for bold, block colours: think pink, orange, yellow, red, white. Flowing dresses, scarves, or even a hat add texture against the blue walls.
Chefchaouen is a destination not to miss on your Moroccan bucket list. Save this post for your journey to Morocco.
