What if you could plan a bucket list-worthy adventure in minutes, not months? That’s what I’ve discovered by integrating AI into my travel planning… and now, I’m going to show you exactly how to do the same.

Why AI Is the Future of Travel

Artificial Intelligence is changing travel forever… and fast. From smart search engines to booking platforms that “know” your preferences, the travel experience is becoming more personalised, efficient, and accessible.

Where You’re Already Seeing It

  • Google: AI now powers Google’s travel search, recommending “best times to go” and comparing flight prices using predictive models.

  • Expedia & Booking.com: AI chatbots assist with hotel booking, travel tips, and even language translation.

  • Trip.com: Uses AI for real-time itinerary building based on interests.

  • GetYourGuide: Uses machine learning to recommend personalised tours.

The Power of ChatGPT: My Go-To Travel Assistant

I use ChatGPT to help plan many of my trips. But here’s the kicker… the results are only as good as the prompts you give it. Without clear instructions, you’re likely to get cookie-cutter suggestions.

Helpful? Kind of. Exciting? Not really.

What makes a great itinerary is what you bring to it: context, preferences, personality.

Real Travel. Real Stories. Real AI.

When I was planning a two-week adventure across Spain with my sister, I used Chat GPT to help plan our itinerary. I told ChatGPT:

  • Our dates and starting/ending points

  • That we wanted hidden gems, museums, hikes, authentic eats, and cultural experiences

  • That we preferred action-packed days and didn’t want long siestas or poolside holidays

  • We have different dietary needs (I’m vegan, she’s a meat eater)

I also gave ChatGPT details like:

“Must include a visit to a winery, at least one hike, sunrise photography opportunities, and budget-friendly restaurants.”

What came back? A detailed, highly relevant itinerary with great recommendations… like buying cookies from nuns through a secret door in Madrid. Yes, that’s a real thing!

How to Use ChatGPT to Plan Your Own Trip

Here’s how to get started:

1. Be Specific in Your Prompt

The more info, the better the result. Include details such as:

  • Dates

  • Starting point and destination

  • Type of trip and occasion

  • Budget

  • Dietary requirements

  • Currency

  • Activities

  • Preferred travel style

Copy & Paste This Prompt:

“Create a [X days] itinerary to [destination] for [X people], departing from [starting point] from [start date] to [end date]. Include transport, accommodation and meals, with all costs in [currency]. Include [list any must-sees or experiences]. Our budget is [budget]. I/we enjoy [e.g. hiking, food tours, museums, culture, historical landmarks, great views, nightlife]. I’ll be travelling with [partner/friends/kids – include ages], and I/we eat [Eg. vegan/gluten-free]. Keep it adventurous and culturally rich.”

For example:

Create a 7 day itinerary to the Amalfi Coast for 2 adults, departing from Brisbane Australia on February 3rd 2026. Include transport, accommodation and meals, with all costs in AUD. Include Amalfi and Positano, a boat trip, Amalfi Cathedral, Limoncello tasting, beautiful sunsets, and a few hours of beach time. Our budget is $15,000 AUD. We enjoy hiking, culture, historical landmarks, great views, and hidden gems. I’ll be travelling with my sister (both in our 30’s), I am vegan while my sister is a meat eater. Keep it adventurous and culturally rich.

2. Provide Context

Let ChatGPT know:

  • Who you’re travelling with

  • What the purpose is (milestone birthday, relaxing getaway, etc.)

  • Any limitations (budget, dates, physical accessibility)

  • Transportation preferences

Context Example:

“We are two sisters travelling together for a birthday trip. One is vegan, the other isn’t. We like local food, hiking, and culture. We don’t want to drive. We have 10 days. We want to avoid tourist traps and love hidden gems.”

3. Add Your Travel Style

Eg. “My travel style is adventurous, packed with experiences, minimal downtime, and I love getting off the beaten path. I prefer nature and history over shopping and luxury. Budget is mid-range.”

Watch Out: Risks of AI in Travel

While AI is powerful, it’s not flawless. Use it as a tool, not as gospel.

Common pitfalls:

  • Outdated or incorrect opening hours

  • Recommendations for closed venues

  • Flight info is still pretty clunky

Always double-check:

  • Opening hours

  • Safety advisories

  • Booking links

  • Availability

Use trusted platforms like Skyscanner or Google Flights for flights, Expedia for hotels, and GetYourGuide for tours.

Why You Should Start Using AI Now

Done right, ChatGPT can:

  • Save you hours of planning

  • Suggest unique, local experiences

  • Help you build itineraries that reflect your style

  • Act like a personal assistant that never sleeps
