Where to Travel Next: Unique Destinations for Your Bucket List

Camels in Egypt in front of the Pyramids

Once in a lifetime experience in Egypt.

Are you stuck on where to travel next? It’s easy to fall into the trap of picking cliché, overcrowded destinations just because they’re the first ones that come to mind. But what if you could experience something different… somewhere with breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and fewer tourists?

Whether you’re craving a hidden gem close to home or an exotic adventure halfway across the world, I’ve got you covered. From off-grid escapes in Australia to the ancient wonders of Jordan, here are some incredible alternative destinations to consider for your next trip.

Tiny house state in the Scenic Rim, Queensland Australia

1. Explore Hidden Gems in Your Own Backyard

Before you jump on a long-haul flight, consider exploring somewhere close to home that you’ve never truly experienced before.

For me, living in Brisbane, Australia, means I have access to world-class destinations just a short drive away. The Scenic Rim is one of my favourites… think wineries, waterfalls, mountains, and charming off-grid cabins where you can completely unplug. The Granite Belt, Mount Tamborine, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, and Gold Coast Hinterland all offer similar magic.

My go-to style of travel here? An off-grid stay in a tiny house, a place where you can’t see any roads, houses, or people, but you’re still close to great hiking trails, boutique wineries, and authentic country cafés. Sometimes, the best adventures are just around the corner.

The Treasury in Petra, Jordan

2. Jordan: Ancient Ruins & Otherworldly Deserts

Jordan was one of my all-time favourite trips. If you’re hesitant about visiting the Middle East for safety reasons, know that Jordan felt incredibly safe, even walking alone at night.

Why visit Jordan?

  • Petra – This ancient city (pictured) is beyond breathtaking. Spend multiple days exploring it… it’s massive. Pro tip: Arrive before the gates open to be among the first inside and experience Petra’s magic without the crowds.

  • Wadi Rum – A vast desert that feels like Mars. Stay overnight in a desert camp, take a Jeep tour, and experience Bedouin hospitality with traditional music and dancing under a crystal-clear night sky.

  • The Dead Sea – Floating in its hyper-salty waters is an experience like no other (but be warned… any cuts or blisters will burn like hell!).

Jordan is a must-visit for history lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone looking for a unique Middle Eastern experience.

3. Egypt: A Bucket List Must-Do

Yes, Egypt is a classic destination, but far fewer people have actually been than you’d expect.

Is Egypt safe?

I won’t sugarcoat it… Egypt requires caution. We had a security guard with us at all times on our group tour, and armed guards are common in the streets. For safety, I highly recommend doing a guided group tour.

Why visit Egypt?

  • The Pyramids of Giza – They’re even more impressive in real life. Yes, you can go inside some of the pyramids, but they’re best admired from the outside.

  • Cruising the Nile – Skip the fancy hotels and do what we did… ditch your five-star accommodation and sail on a felucca (yes we really did that). This traditional boat has no seating… just one big communal mattress where you eat, sleep, and relax as you drift down the river. It was one of the most magical experiences of my travels.

  • Temples & Tombs – Luxor, Abu Simbel, Karnak… Egypt is a dream for history lovers.

Egypt is not an easy destination, but if you’re prepared for the adventure, it’s one of the most rewarding places you’ll ever visit.

The To Sua Ocean Trench in Samoa

4. Fiji & Samoa: Pacific Island Perfection

If you’re dreaming of a tropical escape, Fiji and Samoa are two incredible options.

  • Fiji – Well-developed for tourism, with stunning five-star resorts, crystal-clear waters, and plenty of adventure activities. Perfect for first-time island travellers.

  • Samoa – Less touristy, more rugged, and feels incredibly authentic. It’s a little harder to get to, but 100% worth it.

Must-do in Samoa: To Sua Ocean Trench – A breathtaking natural swimming hole that looks straight out of a fantasy movie. One photo of this place convinced me to book my trip!

Must-do in Fiji: Traditional Kava Ceremony – Try kava, a drink made from the root of a local plant. It tastes like muddy water and makes your mouth go numb (and if you drink enough, even your legs might stop working properly… ask me how I know!).

Both destinations are stunning, but Samoa offers a more off-the-beaten-path experience.

The Rock Islands in Palau from above

5. Palau: A Hidden Gem in the Pacific

Ever heard of Palau? Most people haven’t, but this tiny island nation in Micronesia is one of the most incredible places I’ve ever visited.

Why visit Palau?

  • Rock Islands Scenic Flight – The aerial views of these jungle-covered limestone islands are mind-blowing.

  • Snorkelling & Diving – Palau is a top-rated dive destination. Even just snorkelling, I swam among hundreds of reef sharks at Shark City… an unforgettable experience.

  • Jellyfish Lake – A rare lake where jellyfish have evolved to lose their sting, meaning you can safely swim with thousands of them (if conditions are right).

Palau has limited tourism infrastructure, which makes it expensive… but this is intentional. The country prioritises high-value, low-impact tourism to protect its pristine environment. If you want a truly untouched paradise, Palau is the place to go.

6. Sri Lanka: Wild, Beautiful & Underrated

Sri Lanka is a tropical dream, packed with stunning beaches, lush tea plantations, and epic train rides.

What makes Sri Lanka special?

  • Scenic Train Journeys – Some of the most beautiful train rides in the world, especially between Kandy and Ella.

  • Hiking – Adam’s Peak and Sigiriya Rock offer breathtaking views.

  • Wildlife Safaris – Think elephants, leopards, and lush national parks.

  • The Food – A delicious blend of Indian and Southeast Asian flavours. Very vegetarian and vegan friendly.

Sri Lanka is still somewhat off the beaten path, but it’s becoming more popular. Now is the perfect time to visit before the crowds catch on!

Heart Reef in the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland Australia

7. Australia & New Zealand: Epic Adventures

Even as an Aussie, I’m constantly blown away by how beautiful Australia and New Zealand are. It’s home for me, but if you haven’t visited yet, it should absolutely be on your bucket list!

Must-see in Australia:

  • Western Australia – Esperance, Twilight Beach, and the Kimberley are unreal.

  • Northern Territory – Uluru and Kakadu National Park offer jaw-dropping landscapes and rich Indigenous culture.

  • Tasmania – I’m heading there this year, but everyone raves about the hikes, European-style towns, and incredible local produce.

Must-see in New Zealand:

  • Both the North and South Islands – Each offers different but equally mind-blowing landscapes.

  • Fiordland National Park – Home to Milford Sound, one of the most stunning fjords in the world.

  • Hiking & Adventure – Queenstown is the ultimate outdoor playground.
